This Week's Hike & Play

will be at Shiloh Springs Nature Trails

Sat., Dec. 20th 2003, 12:30 2:00 p.m.

We will be hiking the Shiloh Springs wilderness area along the creek and then into the Juniper Forest. This acreage, possibly numbering upwards of 500 acres, is one of the most unique in all of D-FW bearing a strong resemblance to the Hillcountry. Junipers, also known as Mountain Cedars,  are evergreens that thrive on limestone and spring water aquifers. On the trail we will view the numerous 30-foot limestone bluffs, expansive creek beaches, clear spring water, a Hansel and Gretel-like Mountain Cedar forest that reaches right up to the creek,  a Robinson Caruso-like Mountain Bike course, a paintball hideaway, crystal clear springs bubbling up from the ground amidst mossy green rocks in small pools, and a maze of pioneer trails criss-crossing each other's path over the limestone and rolling tundra.  The trails are too numerous to count. Native Shummard Red Oaks and Sycamore dot the area with brilliant reds and yellows. Junipers blanket the area resembling 20-foot tall Christmas Trees. Bring your camera for this trip. You will want to preserve this trail in photos because the land is up for sale by Hunt Oil and will soon have it's trees digested and paved over by developers just like the rest of Dallas.

If you are new and would like to have someone to meet or follow out to the trail, please contact the Webmaster at least two days in advance so arrangements can be made. You may also post a message at the Yahoo Group "HikeSwim" message board to discuss this trip.  A confirmation email will be sent Friday afternoon confirming the day and time.
